New national security strategy of Moldova subjected to public consultations

Chisinau, 4 December /MOLDPRES/ - The draft decision on the approval of Moldova’s national security Strategy today was publicly consulted on the platform of the parliament’s commission for national security, defence and public order.     

According to the document’s informative note, the Strategy’s adoption is needed in the present geopolitical context, characterized by instability and unpredictability. In the context, the new Strategy has the goal to enhance the state’s capacity to prevent and counteract the materialization of the risks to the national security, as well as to ensure the process of European integration and cooperation with the partner  states.      

At the same time, the document’s authors emphasize that, at present, Russia’s war in Ukraine has serious implications on the national security of Moldova, including in the fields of economy, finance, energy and public order. In the context, an updated security strategy is needed.  

The document contains the strategic vision on six years, clearly defines the security objectives and principles. At the same time, the strategy establishes ways and directions of action in the security sectors, as well as regards the implementation of the instruments for the monitoring and assessment of the national security strategy.    

Among the security goals including in the document, there are the consolidation, development and modernization of the national defence security system for guaranteeing the country’s sovereignty and integrity; enhancement of the national resilience to the hybrid threats and strengthening the security culture; consolidation of the institutions and of the mechanisms of fighting the corruption; extension of the strategic partnerships with EU, Romania, the USA, the NATO and the cooperation at the international level for security and stability, etc.       

The last national security strategy of Moldova was adopted in 2011. Subsequently, in 2016, a new draft was worked out; yet, parliament failed to adopt it.
