Chisinau, 6 December /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu on 5 December participated in an event dedicated to people who take care of children at risk – parental assistants, personal assistants, social assistants. The event was organized by the Labour and Social Protection Ministry and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the presidential press service has reported.

„I listened to the moving stories of wonderful people who take care of children who remained without parental protection as of their own children or who help vulnerable families with children and I thanked them for their work and kindness,’’ Maia Sandu said.

The head of state noted that, in the context of the war unleashed by Russia against Ukraine and multiple crises, it was quite important to strengthen the state’s capacity to provide support to all families and children in need of help. Also, it was important to back all children who had taken refuge from Ukraine.

Maia Sandu stressed that this was possible include due to development partners – the European Union, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland and Austria, which, through UNICEF, last year financed programmes worth 200 million lei.

„These resources allowed us providing financial assistance to the vulnerable families, employ more personal assistants for the children with severe disabilities, increase the financing for professional parental assistants, increase the number of local consultants in the field of protection of the child. Also, starting from 2023, the government introduced a monthly allowance worth 1,000 lei for each child smaller than 2 years. At the same time, starting from 1 January 2024, the single childbirth allowance will increase from 10,932 to 20,000 lei,’’ the head of state added.
