Scientists from ten countries participate in conference organized at Chisinau-based State Medical University

Chisinau, 11 December /MOLDPRES/ - Scientists, young researchers and physicians from Moldova, Romania, Ukraine, Denmark, Austria, Turkey, Georgia, the Netherlands, Greece, Azerbaijan have participated in a conference titled, One Health – achievements and challenges, organized at the Chisinau-based Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy (USMF).      

At the opening of the event, USMF Rector Emil Ceban stressed that, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 75 per cent of the emerging human diseases come from animals. ‘’The environment is hit by the human factor through pollution and contamination, which influences the climate changes and as a result, people and animals bear the consequences. The concept, One Health, is multidimensional and imposes specialists from diverse sectors to joint their forces for improving the global health through communication, coordination and cooperation. The first steps in the consolidation of the initiative, One Health, were made by our university in 2020 and the new concept was introduced in the university and post-graduate syllabi at the disciplines of: Epidemiology, Hygiene, Microbiology and Immunology of the Preventive Medicine Department,’’ Ceban said.           

Attending the forum’s inauguration were more state officials, among whom Health Minister Ala Nemerenco, WHO representative in Moldova Miljana Grbic and other experts. They emphasized the importance of the event through the multidisciplinary approaching of the concept, One Health, in three essential fields: human, animal and environmental health – with emphases on the rational use of antimicrobials, prevention and control of infections, integrated vaccination and supervision.  

The participants in the conference brought for discussion subjects on the combating of the resistance to antimicrobials, prevention and control of transmissible and non-transmissible diseases and the challenges of the climate challenges for the human health. The agenda of the event includes also three workshops and the scientific materials were published in the magazine, One Health & Risk Management.   

The conference was organized by the Biosafety and Biosecurity Association of Moldova, in cooperation with the National Public Health Agency, WHO Office in Moldova and with the financial support of the European Union, within the project, EU4Moldova: for a sustainable health system.
