Chisinau, 7 Jan. /MOLDPRES/- Old-style Orthodox Christians today celebrate the Christmas, which is part of the 12 great holidays.
Old-style Christmas is celebrated in Russia, Belarus, communities in Ukraine, Bulgaria, Armenia, Georgia, etc. The tradition of celebrating the holiday was also maintained in Serbia and Montenegro, because the Serbian Orthodox Church, like the Russian one, continues to follow the Julian calendar, as in some cantonments in Switzerland.
In Romania, the old-style Christmas is celebrated in the communities of Russians, Ukrainians and Serbs.
The separation of the Old and New Style Orthodox Churches took place in 1923, when Constantinople decided to switch from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar.
