Chisinau, 22 March /MOLDPRES/ - The parliament on 21 March approved the Declaration on Moldova’s European integration. Fifty four lawmakers voted for the draft Declaration.
The document expresses confidence that ‘’only Moldova’s accession to the European Union will ensure the country’s future as sovereign, neutral, integral and democratic state and the irreversible way of European integration and accession is national priority project of Moldova.’’ Thus, the MPs called on the entire society, including all political forces, to prove unity and solidarity for the consolidation of the political and social dialogue, in the name of the national interest and of the strategic goal – Moldova’s integration and accession to the European Union.
The document reads that ‘’the European Union, during decades, has been a reliable partner of our country, unselfishly providing logistic and financial support for the settlement of multiple domestic problems of Moldova. Also, due to the generous support on behalf of EU and other member states, Moldova overcame the crisis triggered by the COVID pandemic, as well as the energy crisis from the winter of 2022-2023.’’
The draft also reads that ‘’the European integration will facilitate the civic cohesion of the society, will ensure Moldova’s switch to a sustainable economic development and will enhance the state’s capacities to promote efficient social policies.’’ In the context, the parliament asks the government to undertake all measures needed for the organization of the process of accession to the European Union, as well as to consolidate the state’s institutions involved in the negotiations. Through the declaration, the lawmakers call on Moldova’s citizens for unity for a peaceful and European future of the country.
„The European Union is an area of peace. It was set up as a project of peace, which put an end to the wars in Europe and its creative energies were no longer aimed to destruction and aggression, but to prosperity and peaceful development between nations,’’ the document reads.
Moldova signed the Association Agreement with the European Union in 2014. On 3 March 2022, the Moldovan authorities signed the application on the country’s accession to EU. The European Union on 23 June 2022 gave Moldova the status of country candidate. On 14 December 2023, the European Council ruled the starting of the negotiations on Moldova’s accession to EU.
