Moldovan president: Referendum on EU membership - constitutional, can take place on 20 October

Chisinau, April 16 /MOLDPRES/- Constitutional Court (CC) has ruled - the referendum on EU accession is constitutional, can take place on October 20 and will contain the question "Are you in favour of Moldova joining the European Union?". Head of State Maia Sandu made the statement after the Court approved the draft law to amend the Constitution.
"We need unity, we need the involvement of every party, civic organization, citizen, so that together we can guarantee peace and well-being for Moldovans. United for European Moldova we will succeed in achieving our common goal - that Moldovans live in peace, dignity and freedom in a strong European country," Maia Sandu stressed.
The Constitutional Court today approved the draft law amending the Constitution, which provides for the holding of a referendum on Moldova's accession to the European Union and the inclusion of this desire in the Constitution. The Court's opinion states that "the initiative to revise the Constitution by referendum corresponds to the legal norms".
The referendum on Moldova's accession to the European Union was initiated by President Maia Sandu and would be held on the same day as the presidential elections.
