Chisinau, April 17 /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu met today with Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide, and stressed the strong relationship between Moldova and Norway. In the context of the crises of the last two years, Norway has shown great solidarity with Moldova, supporting our country's efforts to host Ukrainian refugees and strengthen energy security.
The official particularly appreciated Norway's €35 million grant assistance for the purchase of natural gas. This aid has played an important role in protecting Moldovan citizens from the impact of high energy prices.
The head of state highlighted the strong political dialogue and the evolving bilateral cooperation between Moldova and Norway. In 2023, Moldova signed a free trade agreement with the European Free Trade Association of which Norway is a member. Once ratified by Oslo, the agreement will provide new economic opportunities for Moldova's private sector.
Maia Sandu also welcomed the opening of a Norwegian diplomatic office in Chisinau and encouraged the strengthening of cooperation in the economy, energy, education and forestry.
