Chisinau, May 3 /MOLDPRES/- "A society that respects and protects journalists is one that embraces truth and European values. When democracy is threatened by the elements of a hybrid war - disinformation and propaganda, we rely on a free and independent press to provide us with truthful and impartial information. Prime Minister Dorin Recean made the statement on Press Freedom Day.
"On World Press Freedom Day we stand with those who bring the truth into our homes. Truth cannot be suppressed! Our unity in defending this fundamental value is essential for democracy in the Republic of Moldova. I encourage all citizens and government institutions to continue to support and protect the free and independent press," said Recean.
The official said "we must continue to develop a free media market that supports quality journalism that informs and challenges our thinking, but also to have a clean audiovisual space, free from propaganda and disinformation".
Every year on 3 May, World Press Freedom Day is celebrated around the world, marking the fundamental principles of press freedom and paying tribute to journalists who have lost their lives during their work. The day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993, following a recommendation adopted at the 26th session of UNESCO General Conference in 1991.
