Former Prime Minister Vlad Filat acquitted in money laundering case

Chisinau, May 7 /MOLDPRES/ - Former Prime Minister Vlad Filat was acquitted today in the case in which he was accused of large-scale money laundering. Prosecutors announced they will appeal the sentence handed down by magistrates.
Today, the magistrates of the Chisinau Court said that the crime does not meet the elements of the offence and the decision can be appealed to the higher court.
Prosecutors have asked for a seven-year prison sentence and a fine for the alleged money laundering.
According to the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, the former prime minister was suspected that in 2013, as a party leader, he concluded a consultancy contract worth almost 13 million lei with a foreign company, money allegedly derived from bank fraud.
