Chisinau, May 24 /MOLDPRES/ - Sowing and multiannual plantations are in good and satisfactory condition, but the lack of rainfall is already being felt and this worries farmers. It was discussed today at an online meeting between Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Vladimir Bolea and heads of district agricultural directorates.
According to the head of the Briceni district agricultural directorate, Iulia Jeleznii, "cereal crops are in a satisfactory condition, but the lack of rainfall is already being felt".
The lack of rainfall is also affecting farmers in the south of the country. "In Cahul the situation is more complicated. We have problems with autumn crops, wheat and autumn peas. The problem is big and getting worse every day. As for maize and sunflower - the plants are developing well, but we run the risk that the second group crops will also suffer," said Vasile Raru, head of the Cahul Agricultural Directorate.
The Deputy Prime Minister also urged farmers to use irrigation systems to reduce the impact of drought. This requires the creation of water user associations.
The head of the Ungheni Agricultural Directorate, Viorel Scutaru said that in the context of frequent droughts in recent years, he suggested farmers switch to planting other agricultural crops that are also in demand on the European market, apart from wheat, corn, sunflowers, "but this seems not to be so simple".
"Your objections regarding the structure of the sowing are correct and are valid for the whole territory of the Republic of Moldova", said Vladimir Bolea.
At the end of the meeting, Bolea urged the country's agricultural producers to join together in associations in order to increase productivity and efficiency and solve problems in the sector more easily.
