Chisinau, 13 June /MOLDPRES/ - Over 640 household consumers and 20 entrepreneurs from the Buzduganii de Jos village from the Valea Mare commune, western Ungheni district, now have access to drinking water support, due to an aqueduct constructed with the support of the European Union and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Thus, the residents no longer have to bring water from wells, which does not always meet the public health norms.

The construction works worth over 200,000 euros were carried out with the support of the EU4Moldova: Focal Regions programme, financed by EU and implemented by UNDP and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the contribution of the mayoralty of the Valea Mare commune. Thus, an artesian well was designed, which extracts water from the groundwater, a water tower, which provides the needed pressure in the network and an aqueduct network was constructed with a length of about 8 km. The works were carried out on the period March 2023 – March 2024.

„The lack of a centralized aqueduct system in the Buzduganii de Jos village  represented a major problem for the commune’s residents and for the economic agents. The new infrastructure will contribute to ensuring conditions for a decent living, to the creation of jobs in the settlement and the increase in the incomes of economic agents, which will generate additional benefits for the local budget,’’ the mayor of the Valea Mare commune, Alexei Antoci, said.

The aqueduct was quite expected by the residents and economic agents from Buzduganii de Jos, who will now have running water. At the same time, the construction of the aqueduct has also a positive impact on the protection of the environment. The artesian well and the water tower were designed, in order to minimize the losses and prevent the pollution of the groundwater.

The EU4Moldova: Focal Regions Programme (2019-2024) supports the smart, inclusive and sustainable social and economic development in the regions of Cahul and Ungheni, in order to ensure better living standards for citizens. The programme has an overall budget of 23 million euros, is financed by the European Union and is implemented by UNDP and UNICEF.
