Chisinau, 14 June /MOLDPRES/ - Head of state Maia Sandu on 19 June will meet President of Italy Sergio Mattarella, who will pay a two-day visit to Chisinau.
This is the first official visit to Moldova by an Italian president, as Italy is one of the most important partners of Moldova.
Italia hosts the largest community of Moldovans in the Diaspora, which contributes to the strengthening of the relation between the states, development of both countries’ economies and to the consolidation of bridges between people and communities, proceeding from the cultural affinities.
The cooperation between Moldova and Italy is carried out at multiple levels. For instance, in 2022-2023, with Italy’s support, more centres for reception of refugees were arranged and 21 vehicles were purchased for the border police.
As for the economic cooperation, Italy is the sixth commercial partner of Moldova, with more than 1,200 companies with Italian capital in the country.
Also, the generous contribution of Italy, provided within the Moldova Support Platform in 2022 and 2023, compensated a part of the invoices for energy, paid by the Moldovans in the cold season. Moldova and Italy cooperate also on the dimension of international security, especially within the peacekeeping missions under the aegis of the United Nations.
On the occasion of the visit by Italian President Sergio Mattarella, a concert honouring works by Giacomo Puccini will be held at the Palace of the Republic on 17 June, given that 2024 is the year when the works of this composer are celebrated. The leaders of the two countries will be present at the event.
On 19 June, President Maia Sandu will meet her Italian counterpart Sergio Mattarella at an official ceremony and subsequently, the two heads of state will give a joint news conference.
