Chisinau, Aug 1 /MOLDPRES/- It is important to go to the referendum and say our opinion. In the past two years, important steps have been taken on the European integration, and the actions will continue in the next period. President Maia Sandu made the statement at a private TV channel show.

The president noted that absolutely all EU states have declared they support Moldova's accession to the EU.

"We need clarity internally, because externally we have this clarity. Absolutely all European Union states have declared that they support Moldova's accession to the EU by the decisions they took when they supported the granting of candidate country status for EU membership, then they supported the start of negotiations. In the next 2-3 years we have work to do because we have to move fast. Clarity is needed, we want the people of the Republic of Moldova to say clearly and decisively that this is the choice of most citizens and not to have these discussions when some politicians try to present things differently", said Maia Sandu.

The official voiced confidence that in the referendum we can have a strong and convincing response both for those at home and in the European Union.

"Let's write it in the Constitution. We are Europeans already, we just need to write into the constitution. We need a loud and clear answer at this referendum. That means having as big a turnout as possible. It is an important decision that needs to be taken by as many citizens as possible and I am confident that this will happen. It is not enough just to want to become a member of the EU. It is important to go to the referendum and have our say. Let everyone's word be counted and then we will have this answer as clear from the Republic of Moldova as it is from the EU member states," said Maia Sandu.

The President also spoke about the prospect of joining the European Union: "Citizens will make the choice. I trust in people's wisdom and I am sure that people will choose tranquility, peace, development, well-being and the prospect of European integration. I communicate with citizens. I talk to them about what we can continue to do so that honest people in the Republic of Moldova feel protected, so that they have opportunities for development here at home. We discuss what we have done well and what we can do better in all areas, starting with raising living standards, foreign policy and security policy. What are we doing to improve infrastructure, to increase the sources to invest in the localities of the Republic of Moldova. These are the topics that interest me and the citizens", Maia Sandu said.

Elections for President of the Republic of Moldova will be held on October 20, 2024. On the same day, the republican constitutional referendum will also be held in which citizens will answer the question "Do you agree with the amendment of the Constitution for Moldova's accession to the European Union?".
