Chisinau, 31 August /MOLDPRES/ - The Great National Dictation today took place on the Great National Assembly Square (PMAN). Attending the event were about 1,800 people willing to test their knowledge of the Romanian language. The participants were greeted by President Maia Sandu, who referred to the value and essence of the Romanian language. She offered thanks to all those who ‘’preserved the Romanian language alive on this land.’’
„Congratulations, the Romanian Language! I am happy that so many people assembled today, in order to honour the Romanian language at an event which becomes a nice tradition on 31 August – the Great National Dictation. Of all ages, of all professions from Moldova, you, in love with the Romanian language, understand the responsibility which comes through word. The word has the power to create or destroy worlds and for us, the word in the Romanian language has a double power, as it comes as a valuable legacy bequeathed by the forerunners, as well as an almost sacred responsibility which we carry forward to the successors. With gratitude to those who have preserved the Romanian language alive on this land since the most terrible times, when one could be arrested for reciting a poem, today we celebrate the freedom and happiness to live in our language. Thank you for the care to write and speak in the Romanian Language. We thank all writers, teachers of Romanian language. This year, we have a record number of people registered at the free of charge courses of studying the Romanian Language. Knowledge is a treasure; I wish success to everybody,’’ President Maia Sandu said in her greeting speech addressed to the participants in the Great National Dictation this year.
The participants had to write a text of the volume, The School of Life, by Spiridon Vangheli.
For his part, Education and Research Minister Dan Perciun said that way we speak the Romanian language to each other stayed a sign of our national dignity. ‘’Generations have fought for the Romanian language and our duty is to preserve alive the memory of these sacrifices, especially as many outstanding personalities fought for the Romanian language, among whom also Spiridon Vangheli, prose writer, poet, the father of Guguta. In the today’s dictation, Spiridon Vangheli will give us a lesson from the volume, The School of Life, a work which shows the deepness of his thinking and experience. We chose this text, in order to pay homage to our great writer,’’ Dan Perciun also said.
Over 1,800 people today participated in the Great National Dictation, almost four-fold more than last year.
The dictations will be verified in September by a special commission, set up by the Education and Research Ministry (MEC) and the best participants will receive prizes at a public event.
The event was organized by MEC, under the aegis of Moldova’s President.
