Moldovan president urges Diaspora citizens to register, in order to vote by mail

Chisinau, 4 September /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu today urged the citizens of Moldova who live in the United States, Canada, Iceland, Finland, Norway and Sweden to register on the website www.inregistrare.cec.md, in order to be able to vote by mail.     

The Moldovan president said that, for the first time ever this year, Moldovans from the aforementioned six countries can vote by mail at the elections due on 20 October.

„For this, it is compulsory for you to register till 6 September on the website www.inregistrare.cec.md. The experiences of the last years showed that it can be complicated for the Moldovans from these states to come to the polling stations, as the distances are quite large. Now, there is possibility to receive the ballot paper by mail and to save time and resources. Register now, only 3 days are left,’’ Maia Sandu said.    

Contacted by MOLDPRES, the head of the communications, public relations and mass media department of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), Rodica Sarbu, said that the need of the preliminary registration consisted in establishing the estimated number of voters who express their intention to vote at one of polling stations from outside Moldova.   

„This is one of the three criteria established by the electoral law which, along with the information on the dynamic of voters’ participation in the last three national ballots and the data provided by MAE on the number and place of stay of Moldovan citizens abroad, will stay at the basis of the authorities’ decision on the organization of polling stations abroad,’’ Rodica Sarbu said.

According to data by the Central Electoral Commission, over 1,220 people have registered for the vote by correspondence so far.  

The elections for the office of Moldova’s president will be held on 20 October 2024. The republican constitutional referendum will be organized on the same day. The citizens will have to answer the question: ‘’Do you support the amendment of the Constitution for Moldova’s accession to the European Union?’’
