Chisinau, 6 September /MOLDPRES/ - Today is the deadline for the preliminary registration for participation in the republican constitutional referendum and the presidential relations due on 20 October 2024. Over 19,900 people have been preliminarily registered so far.
According to the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), the need of the preliminary registration consisted in establishing the estimated number of voters who express their intention to vote at one of polling stations from outside Moldova. This is one the three criteria established by the electoral law, which, along with the information on the dynamic of voters’ participation in the last three ballots and data provided by the Foreign Affairs Ministry on the number and place of Moldovan citizens’ who stay abroad, will be at the basis of the authorities’ decision to open polling stations abroad.
At the same time, CEC reminds that, at the ballots due on 20 October 2024, the voters from the USA, Canada, Iceland, Finland, Sweden and Norway can ask for the vote by correspondence and the preliminary registration is compulsory in this case. Over 1,700 people have been registered for the vote by correspondence till present; most requests came from the United States – 935 and Canada – 500.
CEC has earlier proposed for public consultations the list of possible polling stations opened abroad. There would be about 280 such polling stations.
The elections for the office of Moldova’s president will be held on 20 October 2024. The republican constitutional referendum will be organized on the same day. The citizens will have to answer the question: ‘’Do you support the amendment of the Constitution for Moldova’s accession to the European Union?’’
