Chisinau, Sep 17 /MOLDPRES/- Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry (MAIA) Vladimir Bolea had an official meeting with European Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski in Brussels last night. The Moldovan official informed the European commissioner about the devastating situation in agriculture, caused by drought and heat, which severely affected agricultural production in Moldova, emphasizing the need for support from his partners to overcome the challenges.

The deputy prime minister outlined the measures taken by the Chisinau government to support the affected farmers, while noting that domestic resources are limited and insufficient to provide the necessary aid. In this context, Bolea emphasized the need to create a Development and Solidarity Fund for Moldovan agriculture to support farmers in difficulty due to climate change and frequent crises in the agricultural sector.

Bolea also brought up the increasingly frequent crises in the agricultural sector faced by Moldovan farmers, underlining the importance of support from external partners, especially the European Union, in difficult times.

During the meeting, key issues for the sustainable development of the agri-food sector in Moldova were discussed, with emphasis on modernization of the agricultural infrastructure, increasing the competitiveness of local farmers on the European market and their adaptation to the new environmental and climate standards imposed by the EU.

Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski reiterated the EU support and encouraged Moldova to continue implementing the necessary reforms to modernize agriculture and increase its sustainability.
