Chisinau, Oct 17 /MOLDPRES/- About 1,500 residents of Miciurin and Birarovca villages, Drochia district, have access to drinking tap water, after the construction of about 20 km of water mains in the localities. The work was carried out as part of a project under the European Village program. Chisinau and Bucharest governments have allocated 10 million lei to implement the initiative.
The 20 kilometers of aqueduct networks provide water supply for about 600 households. Also, a water tower with a capacity of 50 cubic meters was installed, a treatment plant was built and an artesian well was rehabilitated.
The platform on which the water tower is located has been landscaped and electricity networks have been installed around the perimeter. In addition to about 1,500 domestic consumers, the kindergarten, primary school, family doctor's office, house of culture, town hall, the church and five local entrepreneurs have access to the drinking water network.
According to Mayor Anatolie Nicu, the project is of vital and strategic importance for residents of Miciurin and Birarovca villages, especially in the context of climate change and the increasingly severe droughts that the communities have been facing more and more often in recent years.
The project amounts to 11.1 million lei. Most of the money - 8 million lei - was allocated by the Moldovan government through the National Fund for Regional and Local Development. The support from the Romanian Government amounted to 2 million lei as a grant, while the contribution from the local public administration amounted to around 1.1 million lei.
According to the National Office for Regional and Local Development, the Romanian Government has allocated more than 117 million lei for the implementation of 32 local development initiatives aimed at modernizing water and sewerage networks in 34 localities in the Republic of Moldova, as part of a broad bilateral cooperation effort.
