Republican constitutional referendum can be regarded as valid: 42.44 per cent of voters express option on Moldova's accession to EU

Chisinau, 20 October /MOLDPRES/ - The republican constitutional referendum can be regarded as valid. As much as 42.44 percent of the electors registered in the electoral lists participated in the plebiscite. The head of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), Angelica Caraman, has unveiled data to this effect at a news briefing.
According to the CEC head, till 18:00, over 1 million 228,000 citizens out of those 1 million 352,000 electors, who voted till 18:00, took part in the referendum.
At the referendum, the citizens are to answer the question: ‘’Do you support the Constitution’s amendment for Moldova’s accession to the European Union?’’
The question of the referendum was printed on a separate ballot paper and citizens answer with YES or NO for the amendment of the Constitution.
The draft on the amendment of Moldova’s Constitution provides for the completion of the Constitution with two new paragraphs, through which the European identity of Moldova’s people and of the irreversibility of the country’s European integration way is reconfirmed. Also, Moldova’s integration into the European Union will be declared as the country’s strategic goal.
The republican constitutional referendum was organized at an initiative by President Maia Sandu. The initiation on the revision of Moldova’s Constitution was signed by 46 MPs and was approved by the Constitutional Court.
