EU Ambassador to Moldova says negative result at referendum would have created uncertainty state

Chisinau, 8 November /MOLDPRES/ - A negative result at the referendum would have created a state of uncertainty and it is good that this scenario has been avoided. Head of the European Union’s Delegation in Moldova Janis Mazeiks made statements to this effect at a TV programme.     

„I was put the question related to the referendum’s value added. It is clear that, to get closer to the European Union, Moldova is on the right, fit way. In case of a negative vote, we would have entered an area of uncertainty. Georgia is an example which I would not compare with Moldova now. If there was a NO at the referendum, it would have been an uncertainty. It is good that we avoided the uncertainty; we, along with Moldova, will continue to move on this way, insisting on the adjusting of the legislation, of the practices, consolidation of the state institutions, all things necessary for the country’s accession to EU,’’ the European official said.      

At the same time, Ambassador of the European Union to Moldova Janis Mazeiks said that it was to be appreciated that the referendum recently held in Moldova had taken place in full accordance with the national legislation and the results were confirmed by the Constitutional Court. ‘’It is clear that the principle 50 per cent plus one vote was observed. The referendum is already a fact accomplished. We are happy that the provisions dealing with Moldova’s accession to the European Union are provided for in the Constitution,’’ Janis Mazeiks noted.     

The EU official reiterated the European Union’s commitment to back Moldova in the European integration process. ‘’We will continue working with Moldova and will help the country become member of the European Union in the long run,’’ the diplomat stressed.

A voter turnout of 50.72 per cent was recorded at the referendum from 20 October. Thus, 1,532, 264 voters received ballot papers for referendum and 1,531,392 ones participated in the voting. A number of 749,719 people out of the 1,488,874 validly expressed ballots voted for the YES option, while 739,155 people – for the NO option. At the plebiscite, the citizens answered the question: ‘’Do you support the Constitution’s amendment for Moldova’s accession to the European Union? ‘’  

The republican constitutional referendum was organized at an initiative by Moldova’s President Maia Sandu. The initiative on the Moldovan Constitution’s revision was signed by 46 MPs and was approved by the Constitutional Court.
