Moldovan president in Baku emphasizes vulnerability of countries like Moldova to climate changes

Chisinau, 12 November /MOLDPRES/ - „For Moldova, the climate changes do not represent a far threat, but a reality which affects the citizens’ living, the economy and, especially, the rural communities  dependent on agriculture,’’ President Maia Sandu said at the United Nations Climate Changes Conference, the presidential press service has reported.   

„The increase in air temperatures, droughts and unpredictable rains reduce the yield of the agricultural crops and the vineyards face new challenges. The access to water becomes ever more difficult, affecting the daily life. Therefore today, in Baku, I emphasized the vulnerability of such countries as Moldova to the effects of the climate changes,’’ President Maia Sandu said.   

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), hosted by Azerbaijan, is dedicated to the mobilization of the financing needed to reduce the impact of the climate changes and to help the societies adapt to the latter.

The head of state called for the creation of a fair and accessible financing system for the countries with limited resources like Moldova. ‘’We are prepared to implement solutions along with the global community, such as projects on energy efficiency, renewable energy and through the National Programme on Afforestation, we are set to extend the afforested areas by 5 per cent,’’ the Moldovan president stressed.    

On the sidelines of the event, the head of state had more bilateral meetings with her counterparts and other officials. During her discussion with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, the host of the conference, Maia Sandu highlighted the long-lasting partnership between the two countries and underlined the potential of boosting the economic cooperation.   

The discussions with President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan were focused on the promotion of peace and stability in the region, growth of the commerce and Turkish investments in Moldova, as well as the role of Gagauzia as bridge between the two countries. The two leaders expressed support for the conservation of the Gagauz language and culture.  

The meeting with President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev regarded the extension of the political dialogue and the economic cooperation, including through the opening of Moldova’s Embassy in Astana on 1 January 2025.  

President Maia Sandu also met President of Bosnia & Herzegovina Denis Bećirović and the officials discussed the European integration way and the experience in the process of accession to EU.

The head of state also discussed with President of Poland Andrzej Duda, President of Finland Alexander Stubb, Prime Minister of the Czech Republic Petr Fiala and the former PM of the United Kingdom, Tony Blair.
