Chisinau, Nov 29 /MOLDPRES/- Parliament has joined the United Nations campaign 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence to raise the alarm against this phenomenon and in solidarity with the victims of violence.

Fighting and preventing violence is high on the legislature's agenda. This year, the concept of femicide, which is the most serious form of violence against women, including girls, was introduced into Moldovan law. Statistics show that in the first nine months of this year, 22 cases of femicide were registered. 5,224 women have called the hotline for help. 798 protection orders were issued and 788 were violated.

"Behind these figures are real fates, women and girls who have endured one form of violence or another. These women carry their pain and suffering with us. It is a harsh reality that we have a duty to recognize, to talk about, to report and to encourage women victims not to remain silent. And we, the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, are committed to going firmly as far as this fight can go. No excuses for violence against women and girls. No excuses for violence in the family, online, at work, at home, in public", deputy speaker Doina Gherman said.

The national campaign has reached its 23rd edition and is held annually from November 25 to December 10, in the context of the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women.

The action aims to prevent and combat violence against women by raising awareness of violence as a violation of human rights, its consequences and costs, as well as of the mechanisms to combat it at EU and national level.
