Anticorruption prosecutors demand extension of warrant of arrest for Moldovan ex-premier by another 30 days

Chisinau, 1 March /MOLDPRES/ - Anticorruption prosecutors today demanded that magistrates of the Buiucani district court of Chisinau extend the warrant of preventive arrest for ex-prime minister Vlad Filat by another 30 days. Filat’s lawyer Igor Popa made a statement to this effect today.

According to Popa, the same arguments that were invoked at the detention of Vlad Filat are at the basis of the anticorruption prosecutors’ request.

“New reasonings should be unveiled in such cases. There is no legal ground here. The principal goal is that Vlad Filat be deprived of freedom,” Igor Popa said.

The lawyer of the former Moldovan prime minister said that the next court session on this case was to take place on 2 March at 10:30.

Vlad Filat was detained on 15 October 2015, under a warrant issued by the National Anticorruption Centre, after the parliament had ruled to strip him of immunity.

On 18 October, the Buiucani district court of Chisinau issued a preventive arrest warrant against the former prime minister for 30 days. On 11 November and afterwards on 10 December, the judges prolonged the arrest of the MP by another 30 days. On 5 January, the Buiucani district court prolonged the arrest warrant against Vlad Filat by 90 more days.
