Presidents of Moldova, Ukraine discuss by phone humanitarian situation in Transnistrian region, regional security

Chisinau, 8 January /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu today had a phone conversation with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The discussion was focused on the humanitarian situation in the Transnistrian region, where the ceasing of the delivery of natural gas by the Russian giant Gazprom, contrary to the contractual obligations, triggered an acute crisis.  Thousands of people face the lack of heating, of electricity and in some case, of access to drinking water, in conditions of cold and economic difficulties, the presidential press service has reported.    

The two leaders agreed on identifying common solutions, in order to prevent the worsening of the humanitarian crisis and protect the population affected, including through the use of alternative sources of energy, such as the coal.  

Another subject of the discussion was the regional security and the recent developments on the front in Ukraine. President Maia Sandu reaffirmed the support for Ukraine, which defends its freedom, sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the peace in Moldova.
