Chisinau, 28 August /MOLDPRES/- Dozens of farmers, agricultural producers and businessmen from Cantemir, Criuleni, Hâncești, Leova and Ungheni districts participated in the information sessions on the grant competition for the creation of rainwater storage basins. They said these basins would be an efficient and sustainable solution for farmers, in the context of the frequent droughts in Moldova and the lack of irrigation systems.
Applicants from each district have two weeks since the launch of the contest to submit applications for funding, and the deadline is 5 September. In total, 15 grants of up to 30,000 dollars each will be awarded.
The competition is organized within the project Reducing climate risks and disasters, funded by the Austrian Development Agency and implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP Moldova). The project aims to increase resilience and capacity of rural communities to adapt to climate change and disasters by improving water storage infrastructure and rehabilitating local fire stations.
“Applicants must exploit agricultural land located in places that offer the best conditions for capturing water from rainfall and ensure a co-financing of 20% of the investment. The land proposed to be irrigated from the water storage basins must have a quality rating of more than 50 points ”, UNDP sources said.
