Moldova's wines get record number of medals in 2020

Chisinau, 18 February /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova’s wines got 956 medals at 32 international specialized contests in 2020, which is the biggest number of distinctions collected till present, the National Office of Vine and Wine of Moldova (ONVV).
Despite the obstacles and restrictions triggered by the global epidemiological situation, Moldovan wine-makers managed to cope with the challenges and register wines produced in Moldova at the most outstanding events from the wines’ world.
The institution said that 624 out of all medals had been won by local wine-makers, whose presence at the competitions was backed by ONVV.
„Most medals – 417 – are golden ones; the ranking is continued with 277 silver medals and 169 bronze ones. Sixty five wine-making companies from Moldova sent their samples of wines, sparking wines and cognacs for the appreciation and recognition of quality and were given excellent marks on behalf of foreign judges,’’ the National Office of Vine and Wine said.
The Wine of Moldova has got most medals at the contests Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) – 124 distinctions, International Wine Challenge – 77 distinctions and Galicja Vitis – 73 distinctions.
„The annual constant increase in the number of medals, which our medals get at international contests, proves once again that we are moving in a right direction and that due to the efforts taken by wine-makers from Moldova, along with the National Office of Vine and Wine, we produce quality appreciated worldwide. Moldova has a huge potential in terms of developing the vine-growing and wine-making sectors and the National Office of Vine and Wine, through its programmes, will continue promoting the Moldovan wines both locally and internationally,’’ the ONVV director, Cristina Frolov, said.
The medals got at specialized international contests continue the tradition of recognizing the value of Moldova’s qualitative wines and place the country in the list of states with a qualitative evolution of Moldovan wines among the vine and wine products from all over the world.
„The international appreciations represent an extra urge for the local consumers to better know the product of national pride, thus contributing to the responsible consumption of the quality wine,’’ Frolov noted.
As compared to 2019, the bottled wines produced in Moldova got 842 distinctions at 43 international contests in the field. Sixty one wine companies participated in international events on the appreciation of the quality of the Wine of Moldova in all.
