Moldovan president meets U.S. Ambassador, new head of USAID Mission in Chisinau

Chisinau, 24 February /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu today had a meeting with Ambassador of the United States to Moldova Dereck J. Hogan and the new head of the Mission of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Chisinau, Scott Hocklander, the presidential press service has reported.
Among the subjects tackled, there are the priorities of USAID assistance in the sectors concerning the promotion of democracy, good governance and economic development, including the way they adapted to the pandemic realities during 2020.
Maia Sandu said that the USAID’s priorities this year should cover the immediate problems of Moldova, especially the attenuation of the social and economic consequences of the pandemic. Also, the head of state stressed the need to back the small and medium-sized enterprises and farmers, so that they cope with the economic crisis, as well as the current projects, which support democracy locally or which help citizens benefit from better opportunities and services in communities.
In the context, the USAID director, Scott Hocklander, stressed that the assistance provided by the United States was aimed at supporting the democratic and European way of Moldova. To this end, the USAID’s priorities in Moldova will further regard the development of opportunities for young people and women; combating corruption, backing the independent mass media and education for media among citizens.
