Almost 60 per cent of number of offences occur in urban settlements in Moldova

Chisinau, 26 February /MOLDPRES/ - As many as 26.3 thousands offences were recorded in Moldova in 2020, by 17 per cent less against the year before.

The National Statistics Bureau (BNS) today unveiled information on the level of crime rate in 2020, elaborated based on data provided by the Interior Ministry (MAI), Agency of Administration of Law Courts, National Administration of Penitentiaries.  

MAI’s data shows that, in 2020, 26.3 thousand offences were registered in Moldova, down by 17 per cent against the year before and by 37.2 per cent less than in 2016. The crime rate in 2020 was 100 offences per 10,000 residents, against 120 offences in 2019 and 151 offences in 2016.   

Most offences were recorded in urban settlements (58.6 per cent). Each third offence was registered in Chisinau – 27.9 per cent. As many as 5.5 per cent of all offences were recorded in the Balti city, 3.8 per cent in Cahul district, 2.9 per cent in Orhei and 2.6 per cent in Ialoveni.

The every fifth offence is of the category of exceptionally serious ones, quite serious and serious. Thus, statisticians found out that 18.4 per cent of the offences recorded were exceptionally serious, quite serious and serious offences, of which 2.7 per cent were exceptionally serious and quote serious and 15.7 per cent – serious. Each fourth offence registered was committed in public areas (25.2 per cent).  

At the same time, statisticians found out that each second person dead in the wake of the offences suffered following a traffic accident and each fourth one – because of a murder. In 2020, the number of people dead in the wake of offences registered stood at 490. Thus, each second person died in the wake of a traffic accident (39.2 per cent) 26.7 per cent because of murders and 10.4 per cent because of deliberate injuries. Most people died in the wake of exceptionally serious offences, quite serious and serious ones – 418 people.
