EU as most reliable partner of Moldova - European Council President says

Chisinau, 28 February /MOLDPRES/- The European Union is the most reliable partner of the Republic of Moldova, and President Maia Sandu enjoys the support of European bodies. European Council President Charles Michel made the statement at a tday's conference with Maia Sandu.

Maia Sandu thanked the European Union for support in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. "Moldova is not alone in the face of the pandemic and this gives us hope we will get back to normality soon. The European Union is a true friend to our country. Your visit to the Republic of Moldova comes as a result of the productive discussions I had during my visit to Brussels in January, during which we managed to show our partners in the European institutions that they have a reliable interlocutor here. This trust is the foundation of our good relationship. We signed earlier this week the financing agreement with the European Commission on COVID-19 Resilience Contract for the Republic of Moldova. We will make every effort to ensure that 15 million euros will support those most affected by the pandemic crisis," Sandu said.

She noted that in December 2020 the President of the European Council launched the idea of signing an international pandemic treaty within the World Health Organization and stated that the leadership of the Republic of Moldova supports this idea. 

"At the moment, we are in a difficult political situation. The people of the Republic of Moldova have chosen and are demanding processes to clean up the state of corruption, they are demanding the justice reform, things that are not to the liking of some interest groups represented in the current Parliament. I assure you that the changes in society and in the political class are inevitable and irreversible. In order to move faster, justice reform and the fight against corruption need parliamentary support. As soon as we hold early parliamentary elections and confirm a government with full parliamentary support, the better for our citizens. This is another priority for us. We are a European people, with a European vocation and a European future. But we are aware that this future can only be created by us, through the things we do at home - through the fight against corruption, through the continuous work for the modernization of the country, through the defense of the values ​​of democracy ", Sandu said.

The European Council President said that the EU is Moldova's most reliable partner. "Our support goes hand in hand with reforms. Fighting corruption and strengthening the rule of law are the only way forward, "said Michel.

The European official said the EU is monitoring the political situation in the Republic of Moldova and reiterated that the EU bloc wants a stable and predictable political situation, so that relations with the European institutions can be improved. "We are waiting for the political actors to act in the interest of the citizens. Our message is very clear, we are convinced that reforms and the fight against corruption must be implemented. Our support comes hand in hand with the implementation of reforms and is linked to the rule of law and democratic standards, "said Charles Michel.
