Chisinau, 1 March /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova’s Constitutional Court (CCM) on 25 February took over the chairmanship of the Conference of European Constitutional Courts (CECC).
CCM president Domnica Manole today informed that at the 18th Congress of CECC, held in Prague on 25 February, the Moldovan state had taken over the chairmanship of this European constitutional control organization.
According to the official, the taking over of the chairmanship is an act of recognizing the political independence of the Moldovan Constitutional Court. ‘’After the events from the summer of 2019, two states submitted applications, thereby asking for withdrawing Moldova’s right to lead the Conference of European Constitutional Courts. The new composition of the Constitutional Court, through the rulings issued, proved the political independence and professionalism of the Moldovan forum, which led to the withdrawal of these applications,’’ Domnica Manole said.
At the same time, the CCM president called on the authorities to observe the decisions taken by the Moldovan constitutional control organization and not attract the Constitutional Court into political disputes.
The Conference of European Constitutional Courts was set up in 1972, as a European platform for ensuring the exchange of experience in the field of constitutional practice and jurisprudence. Moldova’s Constitutional Court in 2000 became full-fledged member of CECC and actively participates in the works of this professional organization.
The Conference of European Constitutional Courts brings together 41 European constitutional courts and equivalent institutions. The chairmanship of the Conference, established by rotation for a three-year period, can be held only by a full-fledged member of the organization.
