Chisinau, 2 March /MOLDPRES/- Moldova today marks the Day of Remembrance, 29 years since the beginning of the Transnistrian conflict.

On this occasion, several commemorative events take place in Chisinau and other localities of the country.

The conflict in the Transnistrian region started on 2 March 1992. The ceasefire took place on 21 July 1992, after the signing of an agreement between the Republic of Moldova and the Russian Federation.

The war was attended by about 28,000 fighters, soldiers and reservists of the National Army, employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Intelligence and Security Service, hundreds of volunteers and civilians. About four hundred citizens lost their lives and nearly 1,200 were injured. This conflict has also resulted in missing persons, including civilians.

In 2010, the Parliament set up 2 March as Remembrance Day of heroes fallen in the 1992 war to defend the country's territorial integrity and independence. This year, MPs decided to rename Remembrance Day as Remembrance and Thanksgiving Day.
