Chisinau, 2 March /MOLDPRES/- President Maia Sandu, Speaker Zinaida Greceanii and acting Prime Minister Aureliu Ciocoi participated today in an event dedicated to Remembrance and Thanksgiving Day.

In her speech, the head of state said today is "a day when the pain of loss meets hope." "Hope for a peaceful, reunited future, a future with scarred wounds. A future for which we must work together day by day. A future in which everyone feels respected and feels confident about himself and people around him. The conflict on the Dniester suddenly hit us. We have lost human lives, we have lost the peace of our families. There are no misunderstandings between the people on the two banks. We are all victims of regional corruption, which uses this conflict to gain wealth through smuggling, embezzlement, illegal trafficking in goods. We all know that, out of the hundreds of thousands of misfortunes caused by this conflict, there are a few people who get rich. Some of them, right here in Chisinau", said Sandu.

Greceanii said "we have a moral obligation to commemorate those who are no longer with us, the heroes who sacrificed their lives for independence of the Republic of Moldova. At the same time, today is the day when we can meet with veterans, to express gratitude. We owe we have a state, a flag, an anthem. And this debt cannot be appreciated in material values, it is immeasurable and will always remain so. We cannot change history. But we can learn from it: not to repeat mistakes that result in dramas and tragedies and to make things better. In such a small country, it would be a great irresponsibility and lack of wisdom not to be able to keep harmony and peace, especially since they were acquired at such a high price".

Ciocoi said he would do everything possible that the heroism shown by the participants in the conflict on the Dniester should be studied by children, and today we mark 29 years since accession our country to the UN.

The conflict in the Transnistrian region started on 2 March 1992. The ceasefire took place on 21 July 1992, after the signing of an agreement between the Republic of Moldova and the Russian Federation. The war was attended by about 28,000 fighters, soldiers and reservists of the National Army, employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Intelligence and Security Service, hundreds of volunteers and civilians. About four hundred citizens lost their lives and nearly 1,200 were injured. The conflict has also resulted in missing persons, including civilians.
