Moldovan president commemorated heroes of armed conflict on Dniester

Chisinau, 2 March /MOLDPRES/- President Maia Sandu participated today in an event to commemorate the heroes killed in the armed conflict on the Dniester, which broke out 29 years ago. The head of state laid flowers at Grieving Mother monument of Eternity Memorial Complex, the presidential press service has reported.

"Today we mark Remembrance and Thanksgiving Day. It is a day when the pain of loss meets hope. Hope for a peaceful, reunited future, a future with scarred wounds. A future for which we must work together day by day. A future in which everyone feels respected and feels confident about himself and people around him. The conflict on the Dniester suddenly hit us. A river that connected banks, communities, people and brought enormous economic benefits turned into a scale. A wall has been placed between our communities, between our villages and towns, between our destinies. Borders do not cross rivers, borders cross souls," Sandu said.

The president said that people on both banks of the Dniester are the same, they have the same needs, they suffer from poverty, lack of economic opportunities, isolation, corruption, distrust of institutions. "We are all victims of regional corruption, which uses this conflict to gain wealth through smuggling, embezzlement, illegal trafficking in goods. We all know that out of the hundreds of thousands of misfortunes caused by this conflict, there are a few persons who get rich. Some of them, right here in Chisinau," the head of state said.

The president noted that in memory of those who gave their lives defending their country, we have a duty to build a society of justice and well-being for all. "Only by building a healthy society, only by ensuring respect for law and justice, we can stop the departure of our compatriots and we can offer our citizens on the right and left of the Dniester real solutions, we can achieve the dream of people who fought for the country," Sandu said.

Maia Sandu thanked veterans of the armed conflict on the Dniester for the defense of the integrity and independence of the Republic of Moldova. 

According to official data, over 30,000 people took part in the armed conflict on the Dniester, including 300 soldiers and civilians died and another 3,500 were injured.
