Chisinau, 22 March /MOLDPRES/ - The World Water Day is marked all over the world today and its goal is to enhance the degree of awareness of the world’s water crisis. This year, the Day’s subject is the Water’s Evaluation.
According to the Environment Agency, the water resources in Moldova are sensible to the climate changes from the viewpoint of both the quantity and quality.
„The water resources are under pressure because of pollution, increased demand of water, intensity of lands’ use and effects of the climate changes, which compromise the security of waters and foster the negative effects of the drought and deficit of water. Calculations show that the resources of surface waters available have diminished considerably. It is forecast that, starting from 2030, the lack of water will become an obstacle to development.’’ the Environment Agency said.
In Moldova, the available water is presently of 500 cubic metres per one resident for one year or even less, placing the country among the states where ‘’the water is insufficient.’’ Data presented by Moldova’s Waters Agency shows that, to cover the annual need of water nationally, about 850 cubic hectometers of water are collected yearly.
As much as 85 per cent of this volume is extracted from surface waters, especially from the two major hydrographic basins, Dniester and Prut rivers, and only 15 per cent is extracted from underground waters. It is presumed that the overall annual collection of water is much bigger, especially from underground water resources.
The World Water Day is annually marked according the United National Conference on Environment and Development from Rio de Janeiro, which on 22 December 1992 adopted a decision, under which the day of 22 March was nominated as World Water Day. This is a day when water is celebrated and attention is globally paid to the population who suffers from lack of water.
