Moldovan professor, linguist would have turned 80 years

Chisinau, 24 March /MOLDPRES/- Professor, linguist and publicist Ion Melniciuc, PhD in philology, associate professor, member of the Writers' Union of Moldova, holder of the Order of the Republic would have turned 80 today.
According to writer Victor Prohin, Ion Melniciuc demonstrated a vocation for the study of language since he was a student. University professor Gheorghe Colţun said "Ion Melniciuc was a great lover and defender of the language of our nation".
Ion Melniciuc was born on 24 March 1941 in Coteala, Briceni district. After graduating from the High School in Larga (1958), he studied at the Faculty of Letters of the State University of Moldova (1960-1965).
Since 1965 he has been employed at the Department of Romanian Language, General Linguistics and Romance as a lecturer, then as a senior lecturer, associate professor.
He has published several books (monographs, textbooks, teaching materials, dictionaries) and over 300 scientific and journalistic articles. He was one of the active militants of the national liberation and rebirth movement. He signed in various collections and in the periodicals Romanian Language, Literature and Art, literary portraits, many articles on cultivation of the language.
In 1996 he was awarded the Civic Merit medal and in 2010 - Order of the Republic.
Ion Melniciuc passed away on 16 August 2017 and was buried at the Central Orthodox Cemetery on Armenească Street in Chisinau.
