World Theater Day marked today

Chisinau, 27 March /MOLDPRES/- The theater community, artists and audience are celebrating World Theater Day today. It is an additional opportunity to offer a sign of gratitude to those who participate in the miraculous creative act: actors, playwrights, directors, screenwriters, stage workers and spectators.

The head of the Theater Union of Moldova, Alexandru Grecu said that this year too, in order to prevent the COVID-19 epidemic and infection, several theaters in Moldova and Romania mark World Theater Day, broadcasting online performances. 

World Theater Day was established in 1961 in Vienna by the International Theater Institute (ITI) at the World Congress. It was first celebrated in 1962, on March 27, when the season of the Theater of Nations opened in Paris. Since 1962, World Theater Day has become an annual event, organized by ITI centers and the international theater community. ITI is the most important non-governmental organization in the artistic field and was founded in 1948, at the initiative of UNESCO.

To mark this day, various national and international theater events are organized, during which the public has the opportunity to meet their favorite artists. One of the most important of these is the transmission of the traditional international message. Every year, an internationally recognized personality is invited to communicate his reflections on the oldest artistic form, theater.

The first dramatic theater of repertoire, with permanent troupe, founded in Chisinau in 1921, was the National Theater (today - the National Theater "Mihai Eminescu"), which promoted the great creations of universal drama and kept Bessarabian society up to date with cultural life- spiritual development and the European theatrical movement. Currently, in the Republic of Moldova there are 19 professional theaters, in which about 1570 actors work.
