Moldovan writer prints third issue of book on famine in Moldova

Chisinau, 3 April /MOLDPRES/ - Writer, essayist, publicist, art critic Larisa Turea has recently printed the third issue of the book, Cartea foametei (The Book of Famine.

Contacted by MOLDPRES, Larisa Turea said the volume comprised 500 pages.

”This is an enlarged edition. We want to show that, although everything was done for the native population to be destroyed through terror and starvation, through marginalization and humiliation, nevertheless, people remained alive. Many of them preserved their strongest qualities,’’ the author said.   

The writer noted that she had endeavoured to bring together more witnesses and survivors of the famine. Larisa Turea said the book contained numerous archive materials. Its first edition appeared in 1991 and the second one – in Bucharest in 2008.

Romanian writer Ovidiu Pecican said the famine’s death toll had mounted to more than 250,000 people; many corpses were unidentified in common graves, while the others were devoured by the members of the family, threatened with extinction.  Pecican also said.  

Larisa Turea was born in the Calinesti village, Falesti district, on 29 February 1952.  In 1974, she graduated from the Philology Faculty, journalism section, of the Moldovan State University. Turea worked at the Moldova Socialistă daily newspaper (1973-1977), at the Moldova magazine (1077-1990), magazines  Lanterna magică and Sud Est (1987-1992). In 1992-1997, Larisa Tura acted as deputy culture and cults minister, deputy head of the Theatre and Artistic Education Principal Department. Starting from 2000 till present, she has been secretary of the Mihai Eminescu National Theatre.

Larisa Turea holds the prize of the Education, Culture and Research Ministry, as well as other literary prizes.
