Exhibition in memory of ex-mayor of Chisinau open at National Library

Chisinau, 7 April /MOLDPRES/- Starting today, the National Library stages an exhibition of documents entitled Nicolae Costin - leader of the National Movement of Bessarabia, 85 years since birth, in memory of former mayor of Chisinau.
Elena Pintilei, director of the institution said that the purpose of the exhibition is to spread the historical truth about the forerunners of the national renaissance, about one of the founders and leaders of the National Renaissance Movement, the first democratic mayor after 1989 - Nicolae Costin.
45 documents are presented in the exhibition: encyclopedias, periodicals, materials of CC Ideology Section provided by the National Archive of the Republic of Moldova, photos etc.
He has signed 35 scientific publications in sociology. In 1990-1994 he was mayor of Chisinau and deputy in the first Parliament of the Republic of Moldova.
He was co-author of the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Moldova (August 27, 1991) and of the first Constitution of our country.
He supported the return to the Romanian language and Latin alphabet, to the national traditions in education and culture. He contributed, together with the ministries of the Republic of Moldova to the opening of the Romanian-English high schools Mircea Eliade, Romanian-French Gheorghe Asachi, Romanian-Italian Dante Alighieri and Romanian-German Mihail Kogălniceanu, as well as libraries, including the Romanian book Onisifor Ghibu and Transylvania.
He participated in the elaboration of the law on state language. He contributed to the restoration of the Romanian language in the local public administration. He is an Honorary Citizen of Botoșani, Romania. A street in Chisinau and another in Iasi are named after him. Nicolae Costin passed away on 16 February 1995 in Chisinau.
The exhibition will be open until 7 May.
