Programme on financing green economy launched in Moldova

Chisinau, 14 April /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova’s citizens will benefit from new ecological technologies within the Green Economy Financing Facility (GEFF), carried out by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), launched in the online format today. The facility provides for a credit line of up to 20 million euros, available through local banks and free of charge consultancy for beneficiaries, to select the most suitable technologies.    

Both private people or the associations of dwellings’ owners and private enterprises can benefit from loans for green technologies. The beneficiaries can invest in technologies and services of attenuating and adaptation to climate changes, such as the thermal insulation of buildings, efficient windows from the energy viewpoint, illumination with LEDs, thermal pumps, systems of generation and stocking of photovoltaic energy, electric vehicles, as well as irrigation lines by dropping, agricultural technologies of conservation and equipment for collecting rain water.   

„GEFF in Moldova is part of an ambitious programme of EBRD, co-financed by the Green Climate Fund, which is aimed at financing activities of attenuating the climate changes and adaptation to them. The earlier programmes carried out by EBRD clearly proved that the investments in the private sector are essential for edifying more ecological economies and consolidating the resistance to the climate changes in the region of work of EBRD,’’ Head of the EBRD Office in Moldova, Angela Sax, said. 

GEFF will back Moldova in achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement on maintaining the increase in the global average air temperature much below 2 Celsius degrees above the pre-industrial levels. At the same time, Chisinau commits to unconditionally reduce the emissions of the greenhouse effect gas by 70 per cent till 2030, against the levels of 1990.

It is estimated that GEFF will help Moldova reduce the annual consumption of energy by 108,800 gigajoule – the equivalent of the annual consumption of energy of more than 6,000 households. At the same time, the emissions of CO2 are supposed to be cut by 9,880 tons per year – an equivalent to the removing of over 5,000 vehicles from traffic.    

The GEFF programme works in a network of 145 local financial institutions from 27 countries, supported by a financing worth over 4.6 billion euros on behalf of EBRD, from which more than 190,000 clients have benefited so far. These projects led to annual reductions of the CO2 emissions by over 8.6 million tons.
