New consignment of anti-COVID-19 vaccine on behalf of COVAX reaches Moldova

Chisinau, 18 April /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova on 17 April received another 48,000 doses of anti-COVID-19 vaccine, sent through the COVAX facility – a partnership between the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, the Vaccine Alliance (GAVI), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and World Health Organization (WHO).   

The present batch will make the amount of doses of vaccines 86,970, received by Moldova through COVAX in the first quarter of 2021. The COVAX supplies will continue in the next months and weeks with more than 100,000 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, due to be sent till late next June.  

The COVAX platform has recently launched a cost-sharing mechanism, through which Moldova will buy over 2 million anti-COVID-19 vaccines at advantageous prices. The cost-sharing mechanism facilitates in continuation the fair access to vaccine, besides the doses which will be delivered free of charge for 20 per cent of Moldova’s residents, in order to enhance the population’s supply with anti-COVID-19 vaccine.      

So far, more than 90,000 Moldovans, who account for 2 per cent of the overall population, received at least one dose of anti-COVID-19 vaccine and over 9,000 received two doses.  

Six weeks after the beginning of the immunization against COVID-19 in Moldova, the number of cases of infection with COVID-19 decreased by four times in medical employees: from 12 to 3 per cent.

COVAX has delivered vaccines to more than 100 countries till present.
