Chisinau, 19 April /MOLDPRES/- Moldova participated in the eighth ministerial conference FOREST EUROPE, held last week in Bratislava, Slovakia. During the meeting, our country confirmed that it is in line with the pan-European standards on sustainable forest management in Europe.

To meet the goals, the participating states signed two acts: the Bratislava Ministerial Resolution on the adaptation of European forests to climate change; Ministers' statement "The Future We Want: The Forests We Need". The signatory parties have undertaken to achieve sustainable forest management and to promote the Sustainable Development Goals included in the 2030 Agenda.

The meeting also included the presentation of solutions to identify new effective policies to adapt to climate change. Thus, a group of experts nominated by the signatory states and the European Union developed a set of policy recommendations for the integration of adaptation measures in sustainable forest management, within two thematic panels: Adapting forests to climate change; Sustainable forest management - our common response to the concept of sustainable development.

Afforestation and national forest fund is issue approached at the highest level. Also last week, President Maia Sandu had her first meeting on the presidential platform and approached elaboration and implementation of a national afforestation program.

"A program of expansion, management and active protection of forests is needed to stop the overexploitation and degradation of the forest fund," said Maia Sandu.

In the Republic of Moldova, forests cover only 11.3% of the surface, compared to the average of 30-45% in the European Union.
