Council of Europe to support Moldova's efforts in fight against corruption

Chisinau, 19 April /MOLDPRES/- President Maia Sandu participated today together with Secretary General of CoE Marija Pejčinović Burić in the launch of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Moldova for 2021-2024.

According to the presidential press service, the document includes projects and interventions in priority areas for us, such as justice reform and fight against corruption, as well as other important areas, including: supporting media independence, eliminating discrimination, torture and ill-treatment, combating violence against women and children, strengthening local autonomy.

This is the third CoE Action Plan for our country and involves interventions worth 13.7 million euros. The funds come from contributions from CoE member states and third countries and international organizations, as well as from the CoE's budget.

Before the ceremony, President Maia Sandu had a bilateral meeting with Marija Pejčinović Burić, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, and her team in Strasbourg. "We discussed the situation in our country, the next steps to overcome the political crisis after the decision of the Constitutional Court on April 15, as well as our efforts to combat the effects of the pandemic crisis in Moldova. I told the Secretary General my vision for the country and the priorities of my presidential term on the rule of law, the fight against corruption and the strengthening of state institutions ", said the head of state.

The Secretary-General assured he will support our anti-corruption efforts, noting that this scourge continues to affect many countries in the world. The fight against this phenomenon is essential, even if the results of this fight will not be noticed immediately.

"We also discussed the human rights situation in the Transnistrian region and how we could work together to help people whose rights are not respected. At the same time, I thanked Ms. Burić for the support for 26 years of the Council of Europe and the CoE institutions for the democratic transformations in the Republic of Moldova and for promoting in our country, a young democracy, a culture of respect for human rights," Sandu said.
