Moldovan president conveys message on occasion of 9 May day

Chisinau, 9 May /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu today addressed a message on the occasion of the 9 May day, the presidential press service has reported.

The message reads:

„Dear friends,

The 9 May day has a symbolical significance for our country. The territory of the Republic of Moldova was the centre of the great tragedies of the 20th century. The wave of fascist hatred cruelly hit the communities according to the religious and ethnic criteria, followed by the class hatred, organized famine and the repressions made a new terrible hit to the people living here.    

Dear friends,

The historical subjects are the most complicated ones. And the irresponsible politicians, in order to distract the attention from their thefts and cynicism, try to manipulate our collective memory. To resist their intention to involve us in interminable historical polemics, we must know the deeds, know the truth.    

And the truth is that, during the World War II, tens of thousands of people were killed on the territory of Moldova only because of their religious and ethnic affiliation. Tens of thousands of dear people, of neighbours, tens of thousands of innocent adults, old people and children.  

The truth is that, after the victory in the World War II, repressions started and thousands of our fellow countrymen – Romanians and Gagauz, Russians and Ukrainians, Bulgarians and Romanies – died in Stalinist camps. And these people were our close people, relatives, our neighbours, adults, old people, children.  

The truth is that the war represents the greatest evil. And that the state can become a true monster.  

On these May days, I want the war to never hit our land. No family should mourn for their dead and deported people. And each man from Moldova should be proud of his/her country.  

Today we celebrate the first day of Peace, a holiday which is dear to us everybody.

Each family from Moldova preserves in the personal story a tragedy connected with the painful convulsions of the last century. If it is to learn a lesson from this traumatic experience, this is the one of peace and unity. No ideology is worth the sacrifice of human lives.   

The today’s happiness is connected with the victory over the Nazism and fascism, but is also connected with the peace which filled Europe following this victory. The peace is the most precious result of this victory and peace is possible, including due to the rethinking of the way the European nations cooperate, settle conflicts and develop in harmony within a united Europe.

The 9 May day has a special symbolical significance. It is also the day when two great European nations, the French and the German ones, ruled to leave a past full of hatred and division, bringing death, wars and misfortune for everybody and edify a common free and prosperous future. This is how the United Europe appeared, that free and flourishing Europe of which we want to be part as well.’’
