Moldovan acting PM participates in 131st meeting of Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers

Chisinau, 21 May /MOLDPRES/ - Acting Prime Minister Aureliu Ciocoi today participated in the 131st meeting of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers, held in videoconference format, the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry’s (MAEIE) public diplomacy, strategic communication and media interaction service has reported.   

In his speech, the Moldovan diplomacy head, Aureliu Ciocoi, referred to the importance of reconfirming the commitment of the Council of Europe’s member states to observe, promote and protect the common principles and values which stay at the basis of the organization’s foundation: democracy, human rights and rule of law state.     

In this respect, the acting PM highlighted role of the Council and its mechanisms in strengthening the democratic institutions, with Moldova benefiting from valuable assistance through the Council of Europe’s Action Plan for 2021-2024, as well as through the Partnership for Good Governance. The group of Council of Europe high-level experts in the justice sector had a special role in advancing on the justice reform dimension.    

At the same time, Prime Minister Aureliu Ciocoi paid special attention to the system of the European Convention on Human Rights and namely concerning the enforcement by the states of the rulings by the European Court of Human Rights – an element of crucial importance in the context of the ‘’gray zones’’ on the continent as regards the protection of the fundamental rights and freedoms.  

The Moldovan diplomat re-brought to the attention of his counterparts, as well as the high-ranking civil servants of the Council of Europe to the serious situation of the human rights in Moldova’s Transnistrian region; the situation of the Latin-script schools from the region, known as the Catan group, is emblematic in this respect.    

The foreign affairs ministers called on the Council of Europe members to back Moldova’s efforts to interrupt the vicious circle of impunity for the infringements of human rights in the region. Ciocoi pointed out that the enforcement of the decisions by the European Court of Human Rights was the first step to this end.  

Aureliu Ciocoi reiterated Moldova’s commitment to further support the efforts to identify a comprehensive and lasting political solution to the Transnistrian conflict, based on the observance of Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within the internationally recognized borders.
