European officials urge Moldovan authorities to ensure democratic, transparent, fair elections

Chisinau, 24 May /MOLDPRES/ - Acting Prime Minister Aureliu Ciocoi today received at the government a delegation of European MPs, on a working visit to Chisinau, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.
The delegation is made up of the head of the delegation for the relations with Moldova of the European Parliament, Siegfried Muresan, president on behalf of the European Parliament at the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly, Andrius Kubilius, and the deputy president on behalf of the European Parliament at the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly, Andrzej Halicki.
The officials discussed up-to-date subjects regarding Moldova’s relations with the European Union, including the challenges triggered by the pandemic regionally and at the world level, as well as the joint efforts made to combat the economic effects emerged against the background of the Covid-19 crisis.
At the meeting, the acting PM said that EU remained a strategic partner of Moldova and appreciated the dynamic and constructive dialogue held by Moldova with EU. Aureliu Ciocoi voiced gratitude for the support provided by European partners to Moldova, supplying the country with the needed equipment and anti-Covid vaccines.
„The institutions from EU and Romania represented an essential factor in this process and allowed us to receive the first vaccines back in last March. Thus, we managed to protect the first-line medical staff,’’ Ciocoi said.
Romanian MEP Siegfried Muresan said that EU would continue backing Moldova in the process of managing the pandemic. At the same time, he reiterated the European Union’s willingness to strengthen the cooperation in diverse fields of common interest, such the justice reformation and combating corruption.
Special attention was paid to the subject of the snap parliamentary elections, which will take place in Moldova in next summer. The European officials urged the Moldovan authorities to ensure democratic, transparent and fair elections.
Acting PM Aureliu Ciocoi stressed that the preparations for the 11 July snap polls were carried out in accordance with the international standards. He gave assurances that the electoral process would take place with the observance of all safety norms, so that the citizens of Moldova and from the Diaspora can exercise their right to vote.
