Impact of mercury on environment to be reduced in Moldova

Chisinau, 25 May /MOLDPRES/- Impact of mercury on environment and human health will be reduced in the Republic of Moldova. This is the decision of the first meeting on an international project in this regard, held today with the participation of delegated members of national institutions, the project team, as well as experts in the field.
The project Support in the post-ratification process of the Minamata Convention in the Republic of Moldova by strengthening the capacity to eliminate and reduce the risks associated with mercury has several objectives. These include improving the legal framework, strengthening institutional capacity and reducing the risks of mercury exposure, organizing thematic training, developing unique rules for the temporary storage of mercury waste and transporting it safely, conducting studies and analyzes, conducting information campaigns and public awareness.
The project will be implemented over a period of 33 months, in accordance with the Cooperation Agreement between the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment and the UN Environment Program, signed on 26 August 2020.
From 1 January 2021, in the Republic of Moldova is prohibited the import of objects, goods or products containing mercury or the addition of mercury / mercury compounds, other products and objects containing mercury compounds. They must be taken out of service and managed correctly to reduce the risks and emissions of hazardous waste, transport and keep them safe.
