Moldovan head of state informs about decisions taken at Supreme Security Council's meeting

Chisinau, 28 May /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu informed about the decisions taken by the Supreme Security Council (CSS) today.
Thus, CSS will recommend that the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) creates, for the electoral campaign period, a working groups made up of representatives of state structures, who are discover and investigate actions of illegal financing of the electoral contenders’ campaigns. At the same time, the Presidency will set up a working group, which will elaborate proposals for amending the legislative framework on the financing of the political parties.
“I today chaired the meeting of the Supreme Security Council, during which we brought for discussion the corruption risks in the process of financing of the political parties and the electoral campaigns. The ways the illegal financing is carried out in politics are multiple and entail great dangers for the state. It is about money laundering, contraband, corruption, fictitious donations, influence peddling, organized crime – and this is proved by the information presented within CSS today,’’ Maia Sandu said.
Sandu noted that the Supreme Security Council members had ruled to recommend that the Central Electoral Commission sets up, for the electoral campaign period, a working groups made up of representatives of the Prosecutor General’s Office (PG) Intelligence and Security Service (SIS), Service for Prevention and Combating of Money Laundering (SPCSB), Interior Ministry (MAI), National Integrity Authority (ANI), other relevant institutions, which are to identify the risks, detect and investigate the actions of illegal financing of the electoral contenders’ campaigns.
Also, the participants in the CSS meeting ruled that Moldova’s Presidency should set up a working group, which is to elaborate proposals on the amendment of the legislative framework on the financing of political parties and electoral campaigns, ensuring a better verification of the financial transactions, as well as proposals on the amendment of the criminal legislation as to the toughening of the sanctions dealing with the illegal financing of the political parties or electoral campaigns.
„The illegal financing of the political parties and electoral campaigns is a major danger to the national security, undermines the democratic foundations of the society and the legitimacy of the political power. I call on the state’s institutions with powers of control and investigating this phenomenon to undertake all needed measures to combat the concerned scourge and ensure the correct and fair carrying out of the political and electoral process. The law and the democratic exercise are priority,’’ the Moldovan president added.
