Exhibition dedicated to 150th birthday anniversary of great Romanian historian inaugurated at Moldova's National Library

Chisinau, 4 June /MOLDPRES/ - The National Library of Moldova (BNRM) today inaugurated an exhibition of documents and publications titled, Nicolae Iorga  ‘’sower’’ of historic truth. The event is occasioned by the 150th birthday anniversary of the historian, writer, academician, political figure Nicolae Iorga – one of the most important figures of the Romanian science and culture of all times.  

Contacted by MOLDPRES, BNRM director Elena Pintilei said that the exhibition suggested an incursion in history through displaying monographs, articles from periodical publications, ‘’Neamul românesc” (The Romanian Nation)  Convorbiri literare (Literary Conversations), signed by ‘’the greatest scientist of Romania from all times.’’ Pintilei noted that the exhibition comprised about 300 titles integrated in six divisions, which show the historic, literary activity, role of Nicolae Iorga in the development of the Romanian culture, historic researches and the works about Bessarabia.    

Nicolae Iorga was born in Botosani, Romania, on 5 June 1871. He died in Strejnic, Prahova county, being meanly murdered, on 27 November 1940. The historian finished the National Lyceum from Iasi in 1888 and then studied at the Letters and Philosophy Faculty of the Iasi University in one year and graduated it with Magna cum laude diploma in 1889. Iorga improved his higher education at the Higher School of Political Sciences from Paris (1892) and afterwards in Berlin and Leipzig, where he maintained his thesis of doctor of philosophy in 1893. Starting from 1908, Nicolae Iorga delivered courses at Valenii de Munte, Prahova county, diverse courses at the Bucharest University (beginning with 1894) and taught at the Sorbonne University from Paris, with lectures given at more universities from big cities from Europe and the USA.        

In 1910, he became active member of the Romanian Academy and on the period 1924-1927, Iorga was head of the Academy’s History Section. Along with a group of teachers, physicists and other scientists, Iorga helped start the movement of explorers from Romania and develop the organization, The Explorers of Romania.     

As scientist famous in the world, Nicolae Iorga carried out a prodigious scientific activity and left a heritage of over 1,250 books, 25,000 articles and studies, more than 4,963 reviews. He signed numerous syntheses about the history of the Romanians, edited in the History of the Romanians in ten volumes (1936-1939), for which he was called the greatest historian and scientist of Romania from all times. Iorga was elected member of tens of academies and institutions from abroad or was awarded the title Doctor Honoris Causa (Paris, Rome, Oxford, Lisbon, Stockholm, Prague, Santiago de Chile, etc.).    

The exhibition will be opened till 20 August.
