Moldovan poet, publicist marks 70th birthday anniversary

Chisinau, 5 June /MOLDPRES/ - Poet, journalist, writer and translator, holder of the Mihai Eminescu medal Ion Cataveica marks his 70th birthday anniversary today.
Ion Cataveica was born in the Bocani village, Falesti district, on 5 June 1951. In 1968-69, he acted as director of the community centre from the Pietrosu village.
In 1973, he graduated from the Philology Faculty, Romanian language and literature specialty, of the Alecu Russo Pedagogical Institute from Balti. During 1977-79, Cataveica trained for his doctor’s degree at the Language and Literature Institute of Moldova’s Academy of Sciences (ASM). As of 1979 till 1984, he was editor at the Literatura Artistică publishing house. In 1984-87, he acted as head of the literature and culture section of the Tinerimea Moldovei newspaper. During 1987-2000, he worked as special correspondent, then deputy editor-in-chief at the Literatura și Arta weekly newspaper.
The writer debuted with a book titled Măsura de laudă (The praise measure) in 1983.
On the period of the national revival, Ion Cataveica distinguished himself through a string of interesting articles on the democratization and promotion of the national ideals. He made topical running commentaries for radio stations from abroad: Free Europe, Svoboda, BBC (London), The Voice of America, RFI (Radio France Internationale). In 1989, the writer participated in an international conference on human rights. On this occasion, Cataveica gave large interviews on pages of the newspapers „Le Figaro”, „Liberation”, „Le Monde”, as well as at radio stations. In 2012, Ion Cataveica was awarded the Mihai Eminescu Medal.
