Moldovan acting PM has reaction to electoral body's decision on opening of polling stations abroad

Chisinau, 7 June /MOLDPRES/ - Acting Prime Minister Aureliu Ciocoi has reacted to the decision by the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) on the opening of the number of polling stations abroad, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.

„To ensure the holding of the snap parliamentary elections from 11 July 2021, the government does its utmost for the financial coverage of the ballot’s good organization both in the country and abroad. Moreover, the government has showed no sign that it would not have capacity to cover the expenses for the opening of polling stations abroad, if their number would have been higher.   

We are perplexed that CEC has not taken into account the recommendations of our colleagues from the diplomatic missions, which will face the situation to manage the voting process, especially in the countries where more of our fellow countrymen did not had possibility to exercise their constitutional right at the presidential elections from the autumn of 2020.

We regret that, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, they did not take into account the fact that the opening of more polling stations would have allowed a more efficient ensuring of the protection and social distancing measures.  

Proceeding from the fact that CEC has full competences to autonomously decide on the polling stations from abroad, we encourage CEC to revise its decision from 5 June 2021, taking into consideration the recommendations formulated by our colleagues from the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry, especially in the case of the countries where queues appeared and all the 5,000 ballot papers were exhausted, just before the time of the closing of the polling stations,’’ acting PM Aureliu Ciocoi said.
